The absorbed monumentality of the work Urban landscape with wayfarer, centered on the iconography of the wayfarer and which the artist associates with a typical urban landscape of his own, is rendered with a thick, textured painting that is strongly expressive.
The painting style induces one to chronologically place the painting, usually antedated, around 1929: for the dark painting, the dominant color ranges of browns and grays, the deformations and simplifications accentuated by a cursive and gestural brushstroke in which some areas are roughly resolved; motifs that the artist developed between 1928 and 1929 and that would arrive, as early as 1930, at an even more violent and material expressionism of extraordinary dramatic force.
In the second half of the 1920s, the artist painted increasingly isolated and lonely monumental figures, often inspired by the elemental crafts on which the birth of archaic civilizations is based, with all the bearer of ancestral dignity, inherent in the austere vision of epicism, which he goes searching for in Hesiod, Aesop, ancient poetry and literature.
