Palazzo Citterio
Via Brera, 12
20121 Milan (Italy)

Palazzo Citterio is committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible experience for all visitors. With careful design and innovative solutions, the museum aims to be a place of welcome, discovery and culture, breaking down physical, sensory and cognitive barriers.

The Palazzo’s main entrances, located at 12 and 14 Via Brera, are designed to be easily accessible. The facilities are equipped with ramps and elevators that allow easy access to all levels of the building, including the main floor, where the Jesi and Vitali collections are displayed, and the Stirling Room, dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

The museum layout, designed by Mario Cucinella Architects, was developed according to the principles of universal design. The entrance lobby features a multifunctional table that integrates ticket office, information point and bookshop, designed to be usable by all. Curved lines and built-in seating invite visitors to experience the space as a place to meet and relax.

The inner courtyard houses the “Tempietto,” a circular wooden structure inspired by Renaissance elements such as Raphael’s The Marriage of the Virgin. This space, designed as a connecting point between the Palace and the Brera Botanical Garden, was conceived to provide an area for relaxation and dialogue. The interior design also reflects this focus on inclusivity, with exhibition rooms designed to enhance the permanent Jesi and Vitali collections, which once belonged to Milanese families and are now accessible to the public.

During the Palace’s refurbishment phase, augmented reality using NOOR software was used, enabling curators to previsualize the placement of works, improving the organization of the spaces. This innovation results in clearer and more accessible exhibition routes, ensuring optimal enjoyment for visitors with motor or sensory disabilities.
