The thread linking Vitali to Theo van Rysselberghe, the Belgian neo-Impressionist painter and engraver, starts from engraving rather than painting and has precedents in the collector’s studies of the graphic work of Félicien Rops and James Ensor, the major Belgian engravers of the 19th century.
The small navy, made in pointillist technique, was purchased in France in the 1970s and is related to the friendship and working relationship between Van Rysselberghe and Paul Signac, which began in 1887.
