The painting was made around 1867 when the artist, having returned to Florence after a four-year stay in Naples, approached the “Piagentina school” group. The works painted at that time, pictures of seemingly naive interiors, possess a character of domestic and suspended intimacy and are developed in an extremely characteristic descriptive manner, relying on calculated light effects, light tones and a pleasing use of color.

Vitali’s interest in Cecioni is documented not only by the selection of letters from the latter published in the volumeLettere dei macchiaioli but also by the purchase, made after World War II, of the Cecioni archive, later left by bequest to the Marucelliana Library in Florence.
