Licini
Licini gave up figurative painting around 1930 following his encounter with the Parisian Circle et Carré and Abstraction-Création groups. Balance, of 1934, a work that according to the artist showed how “geometry can become feeling,” was exhibited at the Rome Quadriennale of 1935 in the same room as housed paintings by Fontana and the artists who gravitated around the Milanese gallery Il Milione, providing him with an opportunity to establish links with the main representatives of Italian abstractionism.
The postwar period was characterized by the entry of forms and creatures in unreal and undefined spaces into his painting: Rebel Angel with White Moon, of 1955, is one of the later examples of this new line of research, on which he had embarked with the series of Amalasunthas shown at the Venice Biennale in 1949.
