The work bears witness to a characteristic phase in Rosai’s evolution. With the Futurist experience over, coinciding with the Great War, and with it an era of generous but somewhat disheveled impulses, Rosai approached metaphysics, while maintaining an attitude of moderation and personal reflection. His compositions are sparse, compact masses and volumes are treated with measured and essential colors: the theme of the isolated house, evocative of a sad solitude and replicated in infinite variations, will accompany the artist’s entire career.
