Beginning in 1922 Carrà chose a different metaphysical language, triggering a mechanism of gradual distancing from the excesses of the avant-garde and recovering the classical origins of Italian figurative culture, from Giotto to the masters of the Italian Quattrocento: of this new phase, theorized in the magazine “Valori Plastici,” are the expression of the austere and archaic Casa dell’amore presented unsuccessfully at the 1922 Biennial, and La segheria dei marmi that marked the painter’s adherence to the Novecento movement.

There are many drawings for the thoughtful realization of the painting, executed from 1914 to 1922. The 1922 drawing with the autograph inscription “The House of Love” would become an oil painting in 1949.
