In this 1938 painting, De Pisis combines a still life composed of a bottle, a small box and a book with a bouquet of flowers in a vase; everything is placed on the wooden floor, aparquet that the painter paints very tilted, giving the work an elusive and unstable perspective, accentuating, if possible, the impression of movement typical of his compositions, which he executed with a rapidity congenial to the definition of visions that seemed to have a lightning-fast duration in time. Paradoxically, in a seemingly joyful picture, signs of the author’s deep inner malaise emerge. Quite singular, compared to a classical conception of the construction of a still life, appears the mark drawn on the canvas, which is as if agitated by gusts of wind, mobile and convulsive: everything in the painting is provisional and precarious.
