The painting entered the Pinacoteca in 1976 with the first part of the Jesi donation. Emilio Jesi bought it in 1939 from Luigi Bartolini, an artist, engraver and man of letters who was initially Morandi’s friend and later his harshest detractor. Cesare Brandi about the work wrote that it was “truly stupendous: breathtaking with those night-flavored blues and those sands brought to vibrate, like a held note.”
