Alongside the references coming from Impressionism and Metaphysics, there is in De Pisis’s work an interesting vein leading to Expressionism and especially to the work of artists such as Soutine and Kokoschka. The latter executed a series of views of Venice, conceived as movable landscapes, in which all the elements seem to fidget through an eerie brushstroke. De Pisis reinterprets in this canvas some themes from that pictorial affair, painting the façade of the Venetian church of San Moisè as an intricate grid of signs, in a feverish crowding of visual sensations that make the painting teeming with brushstrokes animated by airy, light color. Once again there is no shortage of references to Monet’s Impressionist landscapes.
