The St. Louis of Toulouse, once in the Burns collection in London, is referred to the Master of San Martino alla Palma by Richard Offner who, starting with the Madonna Enthroned with Child and Angels from San Martino alla Palma near Scandicci, initiated the reconstruction of the catalog of this personality, later supplemented by the work of Procacci and Boskovits.

More recent studies have brought forward the beginning of the master’s activity to around 1310, assuming a formation in the orbit of Lippo di Beninvieni and contact with Giotto’s closest followers. The Saint Louis of Toulouse, with rather archaic features, belongs to this earliest phase of the anonymous painter’s production.
