The work was bought on the occasion of the 3rd Bergamo Prize, by the then director of the Pinacoteca, Guglielmo Pacchioni. It turned out to be admired by reviewers, who greeted with some surprise the artist’s transition from arduous subjects, bizarre formalisms and, above all, jarring chromatics, to a new painting, solid in composition and chromatically restrained. It is the first painting in a series, the Ginecei series of 1941-1942, in which the artist resumes a theme begun in 1933, soon dropped, and of which few examples survived the destruction wrought by himself. In Birolli’s stylistic evolution, the work is in a phase in which the derivation from the beloved examples of the French postimpressionists is less direct, and in which attention seems to be captured by the chiaroscuro and coloristic mechanics of the Venetian sixteenth-century.
