Paesaggio, depicting houses and trees in Chiesanuova, a town once on the outskirts of Bologna, was executed in 1925. As in the still lifes of those years, Morandi studies the tight, banded composition, playing on the zigzagging outlines of an arsenal of dusty objects, so in this village he takes as his central motif the square, block-like structure of the houses and the pink-orange wall, arranged in rows, contrasting it with programmed naturalness against the jagged green of the trees that stand out against the warm, summery blue of the sky.
