The painting, also known by the title Grande natura morta metafisica or Natura morta con il manichino, was most likely made in late 1918 after the still lifes already in the Riccardo Jucker and Luigi Magnani collections and before the 1919 one in the Jesi collection. The link between these works should be sought not so much in the common thematic cues such as the mannequin, the white and well-turned bottle, the cylinder, and the rectangular box, but in the warm and golden chromatic intonation, the absolute yet vivid sharpness of the geometric forms, and the calculated yet natural simplicity of the ‘spatial setting. Still Life entered the Pinacoteca in 1976 with the first group of works by Emilio and Maria Jesi, who acquired it in the 1940s from the collection of Alberto della Ragione of Genoa.
