By the time he executed this work, De Pisis was a mature painter, adept at mixing the various ingredients of his art and enriching them with new suggestions; here he takes up the motifs of cherished assembled household objects (a book, a table, a fan), of the picture within a picture (placed upside down and thus used as a simple pictorial surface), of the floral composition, which, however, is reduced to its purest essence, since the artist has placed in a simple glass a single flowering sprig, poignant in its grace and levity. De Pisis skillfully relies on a few, clear colors, moving ever closer to the range of whites and grays that would constitute his palette in the years of illness and isolation.
