The Flagellation must have belonged to a dismembered diptych, along the lines of the two specimens now in the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan and formerly in the Cini collection in Venice, from which the artist’s conventional names are derived.

The Master of the Poldi Pezzoli diptych is one of the most fascinating figures in Spoleto painting of the first half of the 14th century, a season represented by a series of unnamed personalities in contact with the sites of Rome and Assisi, which was suddenly interrupted by the plague of 1348. The work is dated to the years 1335-1340.
