O. Rosai
After Rosai’s futurist and metaphysical phases, it is the turn of the “omini”, the mythical characters of a small world that always unfolds the same, almost outside of history.
The canvas depicts the group of musicians performing at one of Florence’s best-known haunts, the Paskowsky café, but due to the (certainly intentional) absence of explicit environmental references, it is usually referred to by the generic title Concertino.
Indeed, it is Rosai’s typical prerogative to transfer the protagonists of his scenes into an indeterminate and melancholy atmosphere, in which realism fades into the fairy-tale. The predominantly dark tones, muted light, and icastically expressive drawing place the composition at the beginning of the creative journey that would lead to the vast canvas with the Giocatori di toppa (Florence, Galleria d’Arte Moderna).
