Of Russian and Jewish descent, Raphael came to Rome in 1923, where she met Mario Mafai, whom she married in 1935 and with whom she started the so-called Roman School together with Scipione and Marino Mazzacurati.

Her European experience and passion for expressionism provided the group with enthusiasm and international scope. Her works, until 1930, mix suggestions from her Parisian sojourns and Jewish tradition with cues drawn from her husband’s pictorial vision.

Passeggiata archeologica, from 1928, is a deliberately perspective-free composition that takes up the theme of Mafai’s coeval Strada con casa rossa, developing it in decidedly more naïve terms.
