Work of 1935 similar to other compositions of the same year set in a warm and familiar interior. The comparison goes with the numerous still lifes painted by De Pisis between 1919 and 1925, during the Roman period, which depicted bare and simple household utensils in an interior that was then the kitchen of the Signorine Cipolla, the artist’s landlords. Compared to those models, in the 1935 paintings there is no longer a trace of “dry” colors, no impression of humble or ordinary style; the objects depicted glow, suggesting translucent opalescence, the color is warm and richly textured. These still lifes reveal a very free compositional conception, freed from any rigid formal rules, tied solely to the painter’s style.
