This large painting, of a size rarely favoured by Mafai, was painted in Paris in 1930 as a tribute to Rembrandt’s painting of the same subject hanging in the Louvre. The butchered meat, thrown into relief by the bright, bloody light and livid green hues, emerges from the tar-black background. Emilio Jesi bought the picture directly from Mafai when the artist moved from Rome to Genoa to escape the racial persecutions of the time.
